The City of Celina, in Collin and Denton Counties, is among the fastest growing in Texas. The city says its population has grown to more than 30,000, and the U.S. Census estimates the city's population grew 42% from 2020 to 2021.
Tuesday, Methodist Health broke ground on a hospital in Celina. The hospital will be the city's first, and Mayor Sean Terry says the facility will eliminate the need to take patients miles away to other cities.
"It's truly going to save lives," he says. "I can't wait for the first baby to be born that says, 'Born in Celina, Texas.'"
Methodist Celina will have 30 surgical beds, ten post-partum beds, 12 emergency room beds and eight beds in its intensive care unit. The hospital will also have three operating rooms, one with a surgical robot, a cardiac catheterization lab and two procedure rooms.
"This hospital will help support not only this community, but it will help support that 96 year mission of service to the underserved," says Methodist CEO Jim Scoggin.
Methodist opened its first location in South Dallas in 1927 in an area Scoggin says did not have adequate access to healthcare. Methodist now has 12 hospitals, and he says the facility in Celina will provide quicker access to growing cities in Collin and Denton Counties.
"We're where nobody else is. I think that underscores and reinforces that we're about meeting needs," he says.
Methodist says the $200 million hospital is being built with shell space for future expansion as Celina and other parts of Collin and Denton Counties grow. The hospital should open in 2025.
