A proposed master-planned Muslim community in Collin County has drawn criticism from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton, but now one of Paxton’s own impeachment trial lawyers is representing the group behind the project.
The East Plano Islamic Center is planning to build a community near Josephine, including 1,000 homes, a K-12 school, athletic facilities, a retirement home, and a mosque.
Attorney Dan Cogdell, who defended Paxton during his impeachment trial, is now representing the Islamic group. He has pushed back against the governor’s rhetoric, calling it discriminatory toward his clients.
"These aren’t foreign adversaries. These are Texans. These are Americans. These are United States citizens," Cogdell said.
The project has faced vocal opposition in Collin County. Some critics have cited concerns about infrastructure, while others have objected to the group’s Islamic faith.
