A Texas expert on Artificial Intelligence is explaining exactly what the threats are from AI as there are growing calls to hit the pause button.
Michael Garfield is the "High Tech Texan."
He says there are a number of serious problems that those in the industry are worried about down the road.
"Can it shut down the Internet and all communications systems as we know it," Garfield posed as a possibility that industry leaders want to nail down. "If it shuts down banks, the financial faction of the entire world, we can't get our money, we can't get food, we can't pay our rent."
There have been growing calls, even within the AI industry, for there to be a slowdown.
Garfield says the industry is advancing along a very fast and strong pace.
"It's not a massive threat like people coming out with guns, bombs, or things," he said. "It's the way we live right now. We are so dependent on everything that is technological and if that system shuts down, yeah, I can actually see a lot of harm being done."
