A verdict has been reached in the Karmelo Anthony trial. He’s been found guilty of murder.

He faced five to 99 years in prison and was sentenced to 35 years Tuesday evening.

Anthony, 19, was accused of stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf last year at a track meet in Frisco, Texas. After KRLD reported that the defense rested its case Monday afternoon without calling Anthony to testify, the verdict was reached at around 2 p.m. CT Tuesday.

As people gathered outside of the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney Texas, there was some racial tension on the scene, with people screaming at each other nearly nose-to-nose. There were some supporters for Anthony and others for Metcalf.

“There’s been a lot of yelling, a lot of screaming,” said KRLD’s Russell Scott. He said the atmosphere around the courthouse was “tense,” but that deputies were doing a good job of keeping order.

It was also hot in McKinney as people waited to hear the verdict. KRLD 1080’s Emily Capetillo saw one woman laying on the ground in the heat.

Stay tuned for updates.
