Closing arguments begin Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Collin County murder trial of 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony, who is accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco last year.
The defense rested its case Monday afternoon without calling Anthony to testify, setting the stage for jurors to hear final arguments and begin deliberations in the 296th District Court in McKinney. Judge John Roach Jr. has instructed the jury that it will be sequestered if no verdict is reached by the end of the day.
The April 2, 2025, incident occurred at a rain-delayed track meet at Memorial High School. Prosecutors allege Anthony, a student from a rival school, entered Metcalf’s team tent uninvited, ignored requests to leave, provoked a confrontation and stabbed Metcalf in the chest with a pocket knife after a shove. Metcalf, a 17-year-old athlete, died despite efforts to save him.

Collin County District Attorney’s Office prosecutors, led by Bill Wirskye, called more than 20 witnesses, including students, coaches and first responders. They described the stabbing as a provoked, unjustified attack and presented evidence that Anthony admitted to the act when arrested.
Defense attorneys argued self-defense, claiming Anthony felt threatened and cornered amid chaos. They presented a handful of witnesses before resting their case. Anthony faces up to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
The case has drawn intense public attention, with crowds and dueling demonstrations outside the courthouse reflecting deep divisions in the community. The trial has highlighted ongoing debates over self-defense laws in Texas.
