The City of Grapevine says at least 12 businesses were damaged in severe weather Tuesday. The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down in the city, one of three in Tarrant County and six in North Texas. Surveys continue Wednesday.
Extra Space Storage was one of the businesses damaged. The roof was peeled back from one bank of lockers. The business had private security watching the area Wednesday morning.
One man came to check on his belongings and said he found his storage space was undamaged but was only a few feet from lockers that had been hit.
"I'm thankful to the good Lord," he said. "What I see here, I'm just speechless."
The City of Grapevine says five people were injured in the tornado, but they should all recover.
Another person at the storage facility says he is from West Texas and had seen tornadoes before but never in such a well-populated area.
"Where I'm from, they'll land in the middle of nowhere, and everything's fine," he said. "Livestock, oil rigs, they're fine."
The City of Grapevine is urging people to report damage to the Texas Division of Emergency Management using the iSTAT program here. By using the app, cities and counties can more easily tally losses to meet requirements for state or federal aid.
Wednesday morning, Oncor said power had been restored to everyone in Grapevine.
Grapevine Colleyville ISD said classes would continue on schedule Wednesday. The district says Grapevine Middle School had damage to its roof and athletic wing, but classrooms and the cafeteria were unaffected. The district says school counselors can provide families with a list of resources if they have needs related to the storm.
"We appreciate our staff for their hard work – their dedication to our students’ safety never wavered from the moment everyone went into a shelter in place to the moment every student had been picked up from the campuses impacted. We're also thankful for our families as you waited patiently in lines to be reunited with your GMS students," GCISD wrote on its website. "We live in a wonderful community who supported us well today. Additionally, the district is grateful to the Grapevine and Colleyville Fire and Police Departments, our utility providers, First United Methodist Church of Grapevine, and Wise Guys Pizzeria."
