The Garland Fire Department is encouraging people to do a "safety check" on their home after an unusual house fire.

They got a call about flames coming from a home in central Garland on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded quickly and on one was hurt.

Jim Dugger with the Garland Fire Department says investigators looking into the cause of the fire reviewed video from the home's security cameras - including one that was in the kitchen.

He says the homeowner had left several items on the top of the stove.

Video showed their cat jumping onto the counter...and turning on one of the burners.

"10 or 15 seconds after the cat gets up there, all the sudden a fire starts,” Officer Dugger said. “The cat jumps down and runs off.”

The problem is, all the combustibles on the stove caught on fire, ended up catching the kitchen on fire and part of the rest of the house."

He says you should always keep combustible items such as paper towels, dish towels, food packaging, and plastic containers away from stovetops and cooking surfaces - and always turn off cooking appliances when they are not being used.
