A Cedar Hill man has pleaded guilty to killing his roommate last year. Kenneth Wayne Morris, 36, has admitted to a murder charge in the Sept. 7, 2021 shooting death of Ernest "Craig" Slayton.
A judge sentenced Morris to 10-years in prison, according to the terms of the plea agreement. The felony murder charge had a sentencing range of five to 99 years in prison with life possible.
A police report said Cedar Hill police received a welfare check in the 1800 block of Tar Rd. by a man who identified himself as William Morris, brother of Kenneth Morris. "…the Defendant said he had just shot someone at the residence," the police report said. The police report said William Morris "stated the Defendant sounded frantic during the conversation. The reporting party stated the Defendant had shot his roommate…(he) believed the Victim had touched one of his children inappropriately.
The police report said Kenneth Morris said he had borrowed his mother's gun. Police found Slayton on his bed. There were seven spent cartridges in the bedroom, the police report said.
Slayton was a retired engineer who worked at Audacy station KVIL-FM, now Alt 103.7, a sister station to KRLD.
