DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- A felony charge of continuous violence against the family brought against Dallas activist Dominique Alexander has been dismissed.
Alexander had been indicted on a charge of beating his long-time partner by “pushing complainant’s head with his hand and by striking the complainant’s head and pushing complainant’s body with his hand.”
The case was to go to trial before a judge this week, but a prosecutor dismissed the case Friday without giving a reason.
Attorney Allison Grinter, who represents Alexander, says the entire incident can be traced back to a desire by Dallas police to have Alexander arrested.
“There’s been a sworn statement from the complainant saying that she felt betrayed by the police, that they overcharged and overreacted in an effort to retaliate against Mr. Alexander, who, of course, has been a longtime critic of police.” Grinter said.
It is Grinter’s claim that police focused on Alexander looking for any reason that they could find to charge him.
“One of the problems with policing in the United States is you are going to find problems in places where you look. And if the police are only looking in some communities and if they are only paying attention to some things they are only going to find what they are looking for.” Grinter said.
The Dallas County District Attorney's office says the case was handled by a prosecutor pro tem.
Alexander’s legal problems are not over yet. He still faces a felony theft charge in Denton County. Grinter says the case has been put on hold because of the coronavirus.
