A 3-year-old boy who suffered severe injuries in October has died, prompting prosecutors to upgrade the charge against his mother to capital murder.

Dawson Zamora died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025, which was his father’s birthday, according to a social media post from Dahrian Zamora. “My son Dawson has passed away,” the father wrote. “He held on to spend one last birthday with me and refused to go until then.”

Following the child’s death, 30-year-old Chelsea Berg was taken into custody on the upgraded capital murder charge. Dahrian Zamora said the charge reflects Berg’s alleged failure to protect the children, which he said contributed to Dawson’s death. He also said a six-page arrest affidavit detailing the evidence will soon be made public.

Berg’s boyfriend, Christopher Alexander, 30, remains in the Collin County Jail, where he has been held since October. He continues to face charges of injury to a child and tampering with physical evidence; authorities have not upgraded his charges.

The couple was originally arrested after Alexander took Dawson to a hospital on Oct. 14, 2025. Medical staff reported severe brain trauma and extensive bruising inconsistent with Alexander’s claim that the child fell from a bed.
