Classes are canceled today at the Mesquite charter school where a boy brought a handgun to campus on Monday.
During a confrontation with police, officers opened fire and Pioneer Technological and Arts Academy was placed on lockdown. The boy was treated at the hospital but investigators have not said whether he was shot or was hit with shrapnel from an errant shot. The boy did not fire his pistol, according to reports.
From the early hours after the incident, parents were upset over how administrators handled the crisis and feelings were raw last night as parents and students faced administrators at a meeting in the school's basketball gym.
There were strong complaints about communication, both with students during the crisis and with parents afterward.
Some students say their teachers believed announcements of the confrontation were part of a drill. Other students say they never heard any announcements at all.
Late last night, Executive Director Derrick Love announced the school would be closed today, with classes to resume Monday.
