A powerful storm, believed to be an EF-2 tornado, tore through the Palo Pinto town of Mineral Wells, causing widespread damage and injuring several people, officials say.
City leaders say at least five people were hurt Tuesday evening, with two transported by ambulance to Palo Pinto General Hospital and three others taken by private vehicle. No deaths or critical injuries were reported, though one patient suffered a traumatic injury. Several others decline medical transport.
Mineral Wells Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said the storm heavily damaged an industrial park, shredding buildings, tearing off roofs and scattering debris. Two major manufacturers are impacted, though it’s unclear how many jobs may be affected. Nearby neighborhoods also sustained damage.
Officials say about 2,200 customers remained without power Wednesday morning as crews continue assessing debris, downed trees and leaning power lines.
The Mineral Wells High School cafeteria was pressed into service as an emertency shelter. An overnight curfew was enforced as police sought to protect the property and belongings of families who were chased from their homes.
A nightly curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. is in effect for affected areas, and authorities say only authorized personnel are allowed to enter while emergency crews work.
The Red Cross is working with local partners and officials to identify and address community needs.
The Red Cross currently has two shelters open for families who have been displaced or need a safe place to rest and recover:
- Mineral Wells: First Baptist Church, 100 SW 4th Ave
- Springtown: Springtown First United Methodist Church
