Billion dollar project to expand I-30 "the Canyon" in Dallas

Stretch of freeway to expand from 6 to 12 lanes

Construction continues on interstate 30 through downtown Dallas

Interstate 30 through downtown Dallas will be expanded from 6 lanes to 12 when the project finishes in 2031.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is moving forward with early construction on the Interstate 30 "Canyon" project in downtown Dallas, which spans the stretch of highway between I-35E and I-45/US 75. The project will not be complete until about the time the Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks move into their new digs in 2031.

After eight months of work, TxDOT Public Information Officer Kenna Mitchell provides key updates on where the project stands and what drivers should expect as work continues.

Current Status & Timeline

  • Project Horizon: The multi-year infrastructure overhaul is roughly eight months into initial work, with an estimated final completion date targeted for 2031.
  • Active Work Zones: Construction activity is underway across the entire corridor, particularly between the I-35E and US 75 junctions. Crews have recently executed traffic shifts near the east end to create a central work area between eastbound and westbound lanes.
  • Drainage & Utilities: Early tasks include installing new drainage systems, performing utility relocations, and removing existing retaining walls near US 75.
  • Bridge Reconstruction: Construction has begun on a new bridge at Cadiz Street, which will replace the previous structure as part of the corridor redesign.

Scope of Improvements

  • Lane Expansion: TxDOT will ultimately reconstruct and widen I-30 from 6 to 12 main lanes.
  • Congestion Mitigation: The project removes left-hand exits and weave-inducing loop ramps to establish a smoother flow for through and exiting traffic.
  • Multimodal Connectivity: Reconstructed cross-street bridges will feature upgraded accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing over the highway.

Driver Safety and Lane Closures

  • Overnight Closures: To manage heavy daytime traffic volumes, lane closures along the corridor are typically limited to overnight hours.
  • Safety Precautions: TxDOT reminds commuters to stay alert through changing work zones, obey posted signage, and maintain safe speeds, as traffic patterns and lane alignments shift as construction progresses.
