The Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) has bad news for the two North Texas tour stops, Fort Worth's Charles Schwab Challenge and the Byron Nelson that is now played in McKinney.
Both tournaments have been relegated to second-tier status in a PGA decision stemming from the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour which has already siphoned off some the PGA Tour's top players with offers of extraordinarily large purses.
To compete, the PGA announced a restructuring that created nine permanent "Elevated" tour events plus the four Majors, each with purses of at least $20-million.
Four additional tour stops would be designated as "Elevated" on a rotating basis. Those four were announced Wednesday and they do not include either the Fort Worth or the McKinney tournaments - at least for the 2023 season.
Those events will still go forward, of course. But they may not be able to draw as many top-ranked players.
