U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — both vying to be the Republican nominee for one of the state’s U.S. Senate seats — are directing renewed scrutiny at a proposed Muslim community in Collin County.

Cornyn sent a letter this week to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, urging the Department of Justice to investigate the East Plano Islamic Center’s EPIC planned community in Josephine.

In the letter, Cornyn raised concerns about potential religious discrimination against Christians, Jews, and other non-Muslim groups. He also questioned whether the development could involve enforcement of sharia law, in violation of state and federal laws.

Meanwhile, Paxton announced he is expanding his own investigation into the EPIC City development by requesting documents from local officials connected to the project. Paxton said he believes aspects of the real estate venture may be in violation of Texas law.

Both officials have formally announced campaigns for the Senate seat up for election next year.
