Local health experts are closely watching COVID-19 case rates in North Texas.

The numbers have ticked slightly upward in recent days, and while officials say there is no cause for alarm, they are hopeful the recent increases will not become a trend.

Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council President/CEO Stephen Love said the area's coronavirus hospitalization rate remains at a relatively-low 3.7% percent. As of Thursday morning, North Texas hospitals were treating about 560 COVID-19 patients.

Love said a higher percentage of patients are in younger age groups, including some adolescents. With those younger individuals in the latest group to become eligible for the vaccine, he said that may explain the higher number of cases in those categories.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a more infectious COVID-19 variant first identified in the U.K. is now the most-common coronavirus strain in the U.S.  Studies indicate younger Americans may be more likely to be infected by a variant that differs from the original strain.
