It’s shaping up to be one of those nights in Arlington where sports fans and commuters alike will feel the squeeze.
The Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers are both playing home games this evening, with kickoff and first pitch set less than five minutes apart - putting tens of thousands of fans on the road at the same time.
The Cowboys host the Atlanta Falcons at AT&T Stadium in their preseason finale, a matchup that still draws a near-capacity crowd even though the game doesn’t count in the standings.
The Rangers, meanwhile, welcome the Cleveland Guardians to Globe Life Field, looking to build on a season where they remain in the thick of the American League West race after their 2023 World Series title run.
Each venue can pack in massive crowds - AT&T Stadium holds up to 80,000 and Globe Life Field more than 40,000 - and with both venues sitting less than a mile apart, parking lots, side streets, and interstate exits are expected to be clogged for hours.
Arlington police and TxDOT are urging fans to plan ahead, allow extra time, and consider carpooling or rideshare drop-offs to cut down on the gridlock.
Postgame traffic could be especially heavy, with both contests expected to end around the same time. Officials warn that drivers leaving one venue may be funneled into the same choke points as fans pouring out of the other.
For Arlington, tonight is a double-header of sports - and a double-header of traffic headaches.
