The Mayor of Washington, D.C. is asking the Secretary of the Army to deploy the National Guard in her city to help respond to the influx of migrants who had previously been stopped at the border with Mexico.

Texas and Arizona are both busing migrants to Washington, D.C. Texas Governor Greg Abbott started the program in April.

Mayor Muriel Bowser says the migrants are putting a strain on the city's homeless shelters and social services. Washington, D.C. has also set up a regional service center for the migrants in nearby Maryland.

"We need space and we need the federal government to be involved," Mayor Muriel Bowser said. "So I have asked for the deployment of the Guard as long as we need the Guard to deal with the humanitarian crisis that we expect to escalate."

She blamed Texas and Arizona for creating the problem in her city.

"It's obviously politically motivated. The reason why we're different in this is that people aren't coming to D.C. as their final destination," Bowser said. "What we see is that they are moving on to their final destinations through D.C."
