The Dallas City Council has approved a new plan designed to make the streets safer for drivers and pedestrians. The goal of the "Vision Zero" plan is to eliminate all traffic-related deaths by the year 2030.
The plan includes dozens of steps the city will take to achieve that goal, including stepping up traffic enforcement and improving sidewalks.
"Public safety comes in many forms, and one of those is pedestrian safety...and ensuring that our streets and sidewalks are for more than just cars," said Council Member Chad West.
Dallas had more than 200 traffic-related deaths in 2020 and more than 60 pedestrian fatalities that year.
"This is incredible, this is huge. This is our first time as a city saying that we will no longer be car-centric, and that we're going to go forward and protect pedestrians as well as cyclists and eventually scooter riders," said Council Member Omar Narvaez.
