Dallas city officials are asking residents to help identify old water pipes that may contain lead.

The city maintains an inventory of water lines and their materials, but about 225,000 customer records list the pipe material as “unknown.” Officials plan to mail notices over the next month to those customers, asking them to check their pipes and report what they’re made of.

Lead pipes were banned for new water systems in the 1980s, but older lines were not required to be replaced. Health experts say exposure to lead can cause a range of serious health problems, particularly in children and pregnant women.
