A pair of local nonprofits, the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center and The Family Place have each earned $1 million grants from the Highland Dallas Foundation.
As we recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, it's a perfect gift for organizations who are fighing both domestic abuse and child abuse in North Texas.
"We literally could not be more grateful for the Highland Dallas Foundation," said Irish Burch, CEO of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center.
"It's going to allow us to not have to worry as much about our public funding. It is helping to fill the gap...as we expect to see more and more children this year."
Burch points out that so often, victims of child abuse have also been exposed to domestic violence in their homes.
"50-percent of our clients have witnessed violence in their homes in the past 30 days," Burch said.
On Wednesday, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was recognized during the Dallas City Council Meeting.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson took to social media to say: “We must continue to work to make every home in Dallas a safe home.”
