Dallas city offices, most schools, libraries, post offices and many banks are closed Monday for the federal Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday. The closures affect routine government and financial services across the city while essential operations such as trash collection and public transit continue on regular schedules.
All Dallas city administrative offices, Municipal Court and Dallas Water Utilities customer service offices are shut. Dallas public libraries are closed, though digital services remain available. Recreation centers and most city-operated cultural facilities are also closed. Dallas ISD students have the day off, with the district designating Oct. 12 as a professional development day for employees.
Post offices are closed for retail services and regular mail delivery, with operations resuming Tuesday. Many bank branches are closed because the Federal Reserve observes the federal holiday, though ATMs and online banking stay open. Most federal government offices are likewise closed.
Various City of Dallas facilities will be closed in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, October 12, 2026. For a list of City services affected by modified schedules, visit https://t.co/LsmIl2MUpe https://t.co/nMrM6vK6wH

Services that remain open include Dallas garbage, recycling and brush/bulky item collections, which continue on their normal schedules. The McCommas Bluff Landfill and transfer stations are open during regular hours. Dallas Area Rapid Transit is operating, with adjustments for State Fair traffic. Residents can still report non-emergency issues through 311. Dallas County does not list the day as an official county holiday, so residents should check specific county offices.
The City of Dallas formally observes the day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day following a 2019 City Council resolution. Columbus Day remains the official federal holiday name. Residents planning errands are advised to confirm hours with individual businesses and agencies, as schedules can vary across North Texas.
