The Dallas City Council will be combing over the proposed city budget for the next fiscal year.

While there is more than a five percent increase for police and fire in the coming year's budget, City Councilwoman Cara Mendelsohn wants even more.

She says law enforcement needs to be fully staffed in the city.

"We are currently properly staffed for fire and paramedics," Mendelsohn said. "I'm glad it's funded, we got to stay at that level, but for police we're not where we need to be."

Another issue making conversation surrounds a library up for closure again in Councilwoman Paula Blackmon's district.

Blackmon says she will be working to keep the Skillman Southwestern Library open for at least another year.

"We are looking at delivering our services more efficiently and effectively," Blackmon said. "We are doing it right by looking at it in a holistic, thoughtful way verses saying we're slashing this and we're slashing that."

Council members will be offering amendments to the budget over the coming weeks.

The budget is supposed to take effect October 1st.
