Dallas County is reporting an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. The latest figures show a 39.9% increase in cases over a one-week period.

"We have had some slight increases in the number of cases, but it's in the context of very low numbers,"  Dr. Philip Huang, Director at Dallas County Health and Human Services. "The hospital numbers have remained very low. One number that's low that is not good is vaccinations. We're at about 74% of the population 5 and older with one dose, about 64% of the 5 and older are fully vaccinated. The booster numbers are quite low."

Testing results show the Omicron strain of the virus is still prevalent, along with the BA.2 variant and the new BA.2.12.1 variant.

"What we're seeing with this new sub-variant is it is even more highly transmissible than the BA.2, but thus far it still seems to have protection from the vaccine," Dr. Huang said.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins urged people to get vaccinated and to get all available boosters.

"Only 21.2% of the entire population has been boosted," he said. "If you haven't had your vaccination, or your booster yet go to covid.gov and find a free shot near you."
