The Dallas County Medical Examiner is working this morning to determine how a postal worker suddenly and mysteriously died.

Report say USPS employee Eugene Gates was delivering mail in the Lakewood area when he collapsed and died Tuesday.

Officials say it's possible his death may have been heat-related, as the heat index reached 115 degrees that day, but so far there's been no official cause of death announced.

Gates' wife says he had been with the Post Office for nearly 40 years.

The Postal Service says it is deeply saddened by his death and its thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

The USPS has a Heat Illness Prevention Program (HIPP) to protect employees and educate them about heat illnesses.

Funeral arrangements for Gates are pending.
