The superintendent of Dallas ISD ended his tenure with the district Tuesday, six months ahead of schedule. Michael Hinojosa had originally planned to remain as "superintendent emeritus" through December to ensure a smooth transition to the next superintendent.

Last month, the school board approved an agreement for Hinojosa's last day to be July 5.

"I always like to say superintendent of Dallas again, still, but not for long, baby," he said at the meeting. "Just one more week, and I'm gone."

During the meeting, Hinojosa credited the school board with taking steps to improve the district, saying it has become one of the most successful large districts in the country while saying "there's still a long road to go, yet."

"There's been a lot of great work done, and I want to thank you for having the wherewithal to go through some difficult times to now being able to help our students improve their success significantly," he said.

Stephanie Elizalde became superintendent July 1. She had been Austin ISD superintendent since August 2020. Prior to that, she had served as chief of school leadership in Dallas ISD since 2015.

Hinojosa has not confirmed plans after he leaves the district or whether he will run for mayor. He announced his resignation in January, saying he was "not stepping down. I'm stepping up."
