Dallas leaders are once again dealing with the short term rental issue and some on the city council suggest they are dragging their feet.

Some Dallas neighborhoods are demanding that the city council crack down on short-term rental properties.

Councilman Adam Bazaldua says it's time the city has oversight and can regulate an industry that he says is running rampant.

"We have the ability to use registration fees collected for designated code staff that deals solely with STR enforcement and inspection," he says.

But city attorneys say if they act too quickly and create a permit process now, they may lose the ability to contractually regulate later.

Councilman Paul Riddley says they must learn from the mistakes of other cities like Austin.

"When they wanted to invoke a zoning control, the courts decided that it was too late, they could do nothing about the existing STRs that had been issued permits," he says. "That's the trap that we don't want to fall into."

The city attorney recommended that the city consider where it wants STRs before starting to issue permits.
