DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The Dallas City Council has passed a resolution telling the City Manager to look for ways to reduce parking in the city. They also want an update on the status of a previous request to eliminate minimum parking requirements.

The City Council previously asked for a review of parking requirements in 2019. Dallas City Council Member Chad West noted that not much progress has been made on the issue.

"It is still sitting in CPC (the City Plan Commission)," he said. "The purpose of the recent memo is to re-ignite the focus...on our need to update the parking code."

The city code sets out requirements for parking spaces for businesses, homes and apartment complexes. Critics of the standards say they can drive up the cost of new development and prevent older buildings from being redeveloped.

Some Council Members want to maintain some of the parking requirements, at least in neighborhoods they say don't have enough parking.

"I think there's an acknowledgement that one size does not fit all," said Council Member Cara Mendelsohn, "and there may be other considerations in different parts of town."

Council Member Carolyn King Arnold also noted that her district in southern Dallas would likely need to maintain some parking standards.

"We need to talk more about it, because I don't know if reduction of parking would help in the areas I represent," she said. "I'm not trying to shut all the parking down...especially in my district."
