Dallas Mayor calls for changes to proposed budget

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is not satisfied with the budget proposal for the city's upcoming fiscal year. City Manager T.C. Broadnax presented the City Council with his budget recommendations earlier this month.

While the City Manager's plan calls for a slight cut to the city's property tax rate, many homeowners would still see their property tax bills go up because of rising property values. The Mayor wants the city to adopt the "no new revenue" tax rate instead.

"My goal is to ensure Dallas residents actually pay less this year in city property taxes than they did last year and for Dallas to become the major city with the lowest tax rate in the North Texas region," he wrote in a letter to the City Manager.

He's asking the City Manager to adjust next year's budget proposal to account for less property tax revenue. The Mayor wants the new budget document submitted to the City Council by September 1st so that Council Members can discuss it at their meeting on September 6th.

The Council will need to make any revisions and vote to approve the budget before the start of the City's new fiscal year on October 1st.
