Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is criticizing Police Chief Daniel Comeaux for rejecting a proposed $25 million partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement without consulting the city council.

The mayor said the decision to decline federal funding for joint immigration enforcement efforts was made unilaterally and should have involved city leaders.

ICE officials reportedly offered the Dallas Police Department funding to support cooperative operations aimed at identifying and apprehending undocumented immigrants with outstanding warrants.

Chief Comeaux declined the offer, citing departmental priorities and community trust concerns.

Mayor Johnson has called for a public discussion on the proposal and the city’s role in immigration enforcement, saying the issue deserves transparency and debate.

The Dallas City Council is expected to address the matter in an upcoming session.
