Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson is speaking out after two city committees stopped a proposal to partner ICE with Dallas police from moving forward.

"This hearing proved that our process works: open, transparent public discussion leads to informed decisions," Mayor Johnson said in a statement.

"Clearly, there remains some confusion about how this program would work fiscally--and whether and how it would work operationally for the Dallas Police Department," Mayor Johnson continued.

He added while we should always be willing to discuss ways to cooperate with federal law enforcement, we can't afford to stray from our public safety strategies that have led to a violent crime reduction in Dallas.

The mayor wanted the public dialogue about the partnership that would include $25-million in federal funding after the Dallas Police Chief rejected it saying it would not make Dallas safer.

The Public Safety and Government Efficiency committees met jointly this week and were met with overwhelmingly negative comments from the public.
