First Baptist Dallas senior pastor Robert Jeffress says he supports the Pentagon’s plan to publicly livestream the December firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood mass shooting. Jeffress posted on social media that capital punishment is commanded in Genesis 9:6 as a reminder of the sanctity of life and that more people seeing a public execution would strengthen that object lesson.
Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding more than 30 others in the November 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood. A military jury sentenced him to death in 2013. President Donald Trump approved the sentence earlier this month on a recommendation from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The execution is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central time on Dec. 3 at Fort Hood, the same post where the shooting occurred. It would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first by firing squad since World War II.
Hegseth said in an interview that the execution would be public so people could watch and understand there are serious consequences for such crimes. Pentagon officials later confirmed the event would be livestreamed, with additional details to follow. The plan has drawn mixed reactions. Vice President JD Vance said he was not sure the livestream would actually happen and that he would not watch it if it did. Some Fort Hood survivors and victims’ families have expressed differing views on attending or viewing the execution.
I support the Pentagon’s decision to livestream the execution of mass-murderer Nidal Hassan. Capital punishment is commanded by God in Genesis 9:6 to remind people of the sanctity of human life. The more people that can see that truth illustrated through a public execution, the better. @DeptofWar @PeteHegseth

Jeffress, a longtime supporter of capital punishment and a national evangelical voice, has previously cited biblical passages including Genesis and Romans in defense of the death penalty. His statement came as the Pentagon finalized plans for the historic military execution in Texas.
