A man faces charges in connection to a shooting that left one person dead and an officer injured on Thursday in southeast Dallas, police say.
Officers arrested the man later Thursday in Lewisville, Dallas police said. They said a police officer's life was saved by his body armor and that another man was fatally shot on Scyene Road.
Dallas police officers chased the shooter for about half a mile when he opened fire on the officers and got away. The wounded officer was taken to the hospital, but Chief Eddie Garcia said he believes the officer will recover.
Police put out information on the killer and the white pick-up he was driving. Lewisville police got the information and found the man more than 30 miles from the scene of the shooting.
He was arrested at Lewisville Thrive, a recreation center on South Valley Parkway. The rec center was closed while the scene was secured but re-opened Thursday night.
Jose Aldana told KRLD's media partner NBC 5 that he was eating lunch when he noticed two trucks driving by. What he thought was the truck misfiring was actually one of the drivers exiting the vehicle to fire at another truck.
People who live in the vicinity heard some of the shots being fired.
"I heard bang, bang, bang, bang...bang, bang, bang," Renee Pill said. "And then a 'freeze!' And then some more shots...I seen the police...he said something, and then gunfire went back and forth."
"When officers arrived, they actually witnessed a shooting occurring between the suspect and another individual in a car. That suspect saw the officers and began shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire at that point," Garcia said.
An officer arrived as Aldana was calling 911 to report the incident, and the suspect fired at the officer before he fled. Police confirmed in a release that both officers returned fire toward the suspect.
The victim in the initial shooting died from his injuries. Their identity is not being released yet until next of kin is notified.
Detectives determined the initial shooting was not random citing that the suspect and victim knew each other in a release.
DPD placed evidence markers around a large section of the parking lot before blocking off the area with crime scene tape.
