A Dallas police officer who was caught on video punching a man in Deep Ellum last summer has been fired from the department.

40-year-old Melvin Williams was fired following an administrative hearing, for violating the department's use of force policy. A criminal investigation into the officer's involvement in the incident is still ongoing.

Williams was working off-duty at a Deep Ellum bar in July 2021 when he was captured on video punching a man at least five times while responding to a large fight.

He was placed on leave after the incident. Williams, who had been on the force since 2006, has a right to appeal his termination under civil-service rules.

Williams has been investigated before.

In two separate incidents, Williams fired sponge rounds at protesters during the Black Lives Matter demonstrations of 2020.
