Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux announced updates Tuesday to the department’s uniforms and personal appearance general orders, allowing greater flexibility for officers while maintaining professional standards.
The changes, effective immediately, permit baseball caps distributed by the Quartermaster and those offered by police associations. Hand and finger tattoos are now authorized for visibility, subject to approval by the Body Art Approval Board under General Orders 804.04 and 804.05.
A single nose stud is also permitted on either side of the nose. Approved options include a plain gold or silver metallic ball or circular flat stud no larger than 1.5 millimeters in diameter, or a single clear, round-cut gemstone of the same size. Prohibited items include dangling elements, textured designs, colored gemstones, multiple studs, hoops, rings, or any other decorative nose jewelry.

The memo, dated June 30, 2026, and titled “Chief’s Update,” applies to all departmental personnel. Revisions to General Orders 802.03, 804.04, and 804.06 will be published and issued through the Planning Unit in the coming days.
The updates reflect evolving standards in law enforcement while emphasizing professionalism. No additional details on implementation or training were provided in the memo.
The Dallas Police Department serves a major metropolitan area with thousands of officers, and policy changes like these can impact daily operations, officer morale, and public perception. Chief Comeaux issued the document as part of ongoing efforts to modernize department guidelines.
