All Dallas Public Library locations and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center will be closed Friday, July 10, due to mandatory unpaid furlough days for many city employees aimed at addressing a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall.
The closures were confirmed by library officials following the city’s announcement of furlough days for non-uniformed staff. Essential services including police, firefighters and garbage collection will continue operating as normal. The furloughs are part of broader cost-saving measures as city leaders work to close a roughly $30 million gap before the fiscal year ends.
City Manager T.C. Broadnax outlined the plan in late June, requiring most non-uniformed employees to take three unpaid days: July 10, Sept. 4 and Sept. 28. Some leadership roles face additional unpaid time. Employees cannot use vacation or sick leave to cover the days. The move affects various departments, leading to the temporary shutdown of non-essential public facilities like libraries and certain community centers.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in South Dallas, which offers programs alongside library services, will also close Friday. Residents with borrowed materials can keep them without penalty during the closure, according to library guidance.
This is the first of the scheduled furlough days, with two more planned for September. City officials have described the unpaid leave as a necessary step amid ongoing budget pressures in Dallas, though specific details on the exact shortfall and long-term impacts continue to be discussed by council members.
The decision highlights challenges facing municipal services as Dallas balances fiscal constraints with public needs. Library users are encouraged to check the Dallas Public Library website or app for updated hours and alternative access options, such as online resources, following the closure.
