All Dallas recreation centers are closed Friday, Aug. 7, as part of mandatory city employee furlough days implemented to address an ongoing $30 million budget shortfall.
According to Dallas Park and Recreation, the department strategically rescheduled its required city furlough day to late summer. Department officials said the decision was made to keep recreation centers fully operational during the peak summer rush when community demand is highest, while still complying with municipal budget reduction mandates.
While all neighborhood recreation centers are closed Friday, aquatics facilities, administrative offices, and maintenance operations will remain open and operate on their regular schedules, park officials confirmed. Normal recreation center operations will resume on Saturday, Aug. 8.

The one-day closure forces affected Park and Recreation personnel to take an unpaid leave day without the option to supplement pay using accrued paid time off. According to city records, Dallas City Manager Kimberly Tolbert implemented mandatory staff furloughs across non-emergency departments in June to combat a $30 million budget gap caused by escalating public safety overtime expenses, healthcare claims, and lower-than-projected sales tax revenues. Emergency and essential operations, including the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire-Rescue, and 911 dispatch, are exempt from the furlough schedule.
In addition to staff furloughs, the city has instituted a municipal hiring freeze, suspended non-essential travel, and eliminated non-mission-critical overtime pay across departments. According to city officials, two additional citywide furlough days are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 28, during which all Dallas public library branches and municipal offices are slated to close.
