Dallas County health officials have confirmed the first West Nile virus death of the season.
The victim, a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions, died from the neuroinvasive form of the disease, which can cause swelling of the brain and spinal cord.
The county has reported hundreds of mosquito traps testing positive for the virus this year, signaling widespread activity across North Texas.
Health officials continue to urge residents to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves outdoors, and eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed.
Dallas County Health and Human Services tracks West Nile cases annually and says the risk typically peaks in late summer and early fall when mosquito populations are highest.
