The Dallas City Council has unanimously approved a program providing grants of up to $10,000 to low-income seniors to make home improvements. The money for the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization was included in this year's budget.

The program aims to increase home safety and efficiency while also making neighborhoods stronger.

"I think this is a program that can have a great impact on a very vulnerable segment of our population," says Dallas City Councilman Paul Ridley.

Grants are available for Dallas residents who are at least 65 years old and have an income less than 80% of the area median income. The money can be used for equipment like wheelchair ramps but also repairs to HVAC systems, water heaters and plumbing.

"Housing is proud to deliver a program that will address the demands of our senior homeowners, who struggle with repair needs and lack the resources to fix them. As we prepare to launch this program, we hope it builds the momentum needed for future growth,” Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Director David Noguera wrote in a statement.

Ridley says the program can help seniors "age in place."

"They can stay in the neighborhoods, preserve the housing stock in these neighborhoods," he says.

People can download an application here. People can also pick one up at City hall, any library or rec center.

People can also get more information by calling (214) 670-3644 or visiting the Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization office at Dallas City Hall.

The City of Dallas will take applications starting February 1 through March 3.
