Four Texas counties, including Dallas and Tarrant, may soon be designated as having unhealthy levels of soot under stricter air quality standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency earlier this year.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is set to vote on whether to recommend that Dallas, Harris, Tarrant, and Bowie counties be classified as nonattainment for particulate matter pollution. The designation would require increased efforts to reduce soot levels from sources such as industry, vehicles, and lawn equipment.

Ian Seamans, an advocate with Environment Texas, called for stronger measures to address the issue, including rebates and incentives for electric lawn equipment like those proposed by the city of Dallas. He said there’s really no safe amount of soot.
