The Dallas City Council on Wednesday updated the city’s definition of smoking to include e-cigarettes, joining other Texas cities in restricting vaping.
Under the updated ordinance, vaping will be prohibited inside public buildings, within 15 feet of entrances, and in city parks. Businesses, including restaurants and bars, will be required to update their signage to reflect the inclusion of e-cigarettes. Violators face fines of up to $500 per offense.
Supporters of the measure argue that such bans help "denormalize" the use of tobacco products. Cities like Austin, Houston, and San Antonio have already implemented similar restrictions.
Dallas, however, will offer a one-year grace period for residents and businesses to adjust. The new rules are set to take effect in December 2025.
