Dallas will start work later this year on an update to the city's long-term water supply plan.

For the past 20 years, the city has worked on reducing demand through water conservation efforts. Dallas Water Utilities Director Terry Lowrey says those programs have added two to three years to the city's water supply, while also reducing the city's peak demand for water.

"20 years ago we had a peak day of 742 million gallons in a day, most of those occur in August or September," Lowrey said. "In 2020, our peak day was 588 million gallons"

"Some of that decrease is due to the heavy rainfall we've had in the past few years, but there's been a definite downward trend in that. At the same time that our population has increased by 10 percent."

She says conservation will continue to play an important role in the city's effort to manage its water supply.
