Public health officials in Denton County are optimistic about their latest COVID-19 trends.

"The seven-day average of COVID-19 percentage continues to decline," said Denton County Public Health Director Dr. Matt Richardson. "It's not as rapid of a decline as we would like in the last two or three days."

Dr. Richardson said there was also reason for optimism regarding the data on COVID-19 vaccine booster shots.

"We're really proud of the boosters we have been able to give. To date, we've given 10,029 boosters and 1,100 third doses," he said.

He's urging people to continue taking steps to limit the spread of the virus and to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

"We're still a long way from even 'moderate' transmission. We're in 'high' right now," he said. "It's not time to let up on the vaccine availability or access. It's not time to resume our life as we knew in early 2019."

He told Denton County Commissioners at their weekly meeting that there were some clear steps that could move the county into a better position.

"More and more vaccinated people, more and more people wearing a mask if they're around someone else that's recently positive," he said. "If we can adhere to those simple rules, we're going to continue to enjoy this improvement."
