White Rock Lake eagles have triplets

White Rock Lake bald eagle mom "Nora" watching over her recently -born triplets

There is some big (and very tiny) news soaring over White Rock Lake! Our local celebrity bald eagles, Nick and Nora, have officially expanded their family. This year, they’ve welcomed triplets into the nest.

While three fuzzy heads peaking over the edge of the nest is a sight to behold, Dallas biologist Brett Johnson says the little ones are currently facing a steep uphill battle for survival.

The Survival Stakes

Because the eaglets hatched at different times, they vary in size and strength. In the wild, this creates a "sibling rivalry" where the older, larger babies often outcompete the youngest for food.

According to Johnson:

  • The Current Odds: Right now, there is only a 10% chance that all three will survive to fledge.
  • The Two-Week Turning Point: If the trio can make it through the next 14 days, those survival odds jump significantly to 40%.

A Dallas Legacy

Nick and Nora have become staples of the White Rock Lake community, having lived and nested around the water for several years. They are experienced parents, and watching them navigate the challenges of a "full house" is both a testament to the return of bald eagles to urban Texas and a reminder of how fragile nature can be.

The next two weeks are critical for these little North Texans. We’re all rooting for Nick, Nora, and their three resilient babies!

Pro Tip: If you're heading out to catch a glimpse, please remember to keep your distance and use binoculars or a long lens to give the family the space they need to thrive.
