The city of DeSoto is beginning a nighttime operation to shoot and kill coyotes after several recent attacks on pets.

Trained hunters working with animal control will patrol city streets overnight, targeting the animals from their vehicles.

Officials say the effort comes after a string of at least five reported pet attacks in residential areas over the past few weeks. Residents are being warned not to be alarmed if they hear gunfire at night during the operation.

The city says the goal is to reduce the growing number of coyotes roaming through neighborhoods and to protect both pets and public safety. The hunts will continue until wildlife officials determine the threat has been contained.
