Detroit has unveiled a 10-foot bronze RoboCop statue in its Eastern Market district, celebrating the cult-classic 1987 film that was famously set in Detroit but largely filmed in Dallas.

The 2.5-ton sculpture debuted this week after more than a decade of planning, fundraising and fan support.

The movie’s gritty, futuristic version of “Detroit” was brought to life in downtown Dallas, where City Hall, the Plaza of the Americas and other landmarks doubled as key filming locations — a connection that has become a point of local trivia and movie-history pride.

The idea for the statue caught fire in 2011 after a tweet suggested Detroit deserved its own pop-culture icon like Philadelphia’s Rocky statue, prompting fans to crowdfund the project.

Local artists and foundries completed the piece, which supporters say honors both Detroit’s resilience and the movie’s enduring cultural footprint. With its debut, Dallas movie buffs now have a new landmark more than a thousand miles away that still reflects a slice of the city’s cinematic legacy.
