Thanks to a huge boost in international travel, DFW airport drops to the 3rd busiest in the world.
Atlanta is still the busiest airport in the world and it is now followed by Dubai International Airport, then DFW. That's the new rankings according to the Airports Council International’s list.
Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport saw more than 104 million passengers last year and more than 86 million passengers traveled thru Dubai. DFW reported nearly 82 million passengers, an increase of nearly nine percent.
A huge resurgence in international travel shook up this year's rankings.
DFW hopes to welcome 100 million passengers by the end of the decade, according to airport officials.
DFW is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and airport leaders say if the airport continues to grow the way it has for the past five decades, that milestone could be reached sooner.
