We're just days away from the total solar eclipse on April 8th, and as the big day gets closer, experts are urging businesses to make plans now to avoid employee absences.
The highly anticipated upcoming total eclipse is being called a 'once-in-a-lifetime' event - with an estimated 1.5 million visitors journeying to the DFW area to experience totality. That's even more than events like the Super Bowl and the State Fair of Texas.
Experts are now alerting employers of potentially unprecedented employee absenteeism if they fail to make accommodations for the eclipse.
Jo Trizila, founder of Total Eclipse DFW, says businesses should learn from the 2017 eclipse and start planning now.
“It’s estimated that the 2017 Eclipse cost U.S. employers around $694 million in lost productivity, with some areas experiencing as much as $200 million in losses due to absenteeism,” Trizila said.
“Employers in Dallas-Fort Worth have a unique opportunity to learn from this experience and proactively plan for the April 8 Eclipse to mitigate potential disruptions.”
Total Eclipse DFW is a regional initiative committed to prepping DFW for the eclipse. They're urging employers to consider implementing 'Totality Time Off' policies or hosting on-site viewing opportunities for their employees - measures they say will help mitigate unplanned absences.
Steps employers can take to accomodate their employees include supplying eclipse eyewear, encouraging them to bring a lunch, and informing them in advance that they will have the chance to see the eclipse during work hours on April 8th.
“The Total Solar Eclipse is not only a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event but also an opportunity for the Dallas-Fort Worth community to come together and experience something truly extraordinary,” said Trizila.
“By taking proactive steps to enable their employees to participate safely, employers can play a vital role in making this a positive and memorable experience for all.”
Total Eclipse DFW is offering employers who want to start planning for the eclipse a number of resources including employer checklists, tips for hosting on-site viewings, and educational materials to give to employees.
The organization also emphasizes the importance of ISO-certified glasses to ensure safe eclipse viewing. Find more info at TotalEclipseDFW.com.
