Police in Plano have arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault case from 1991. They say 64-year-old Nicholas Ray Carney is suspected of abducting and sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.

The victim and her friend were walking through a neighborhood in Plano in August of 1991 when they were approached by a man in a car. Court paperwork shows the man asked the two kids for help finding his dog, then grabbed the 8-year-old girl and drove off. She was later found in Garland.

Police collected DNA evidence at the time. The girl was also able to provide a description of her attacker.

An investigator with the Plano Police Department recently ran that DNA evidence through a national genealogical database with help from an outside firm. That resulted in a partial match. Police began to look for relatives of that person, and their investigation led them to Carney. He had been stopped by police in Garland a few months after the attack.

They found Carney living in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Detectives collected evidence from his trash outside his home and sent it off for tests. DNA found on cigarettes matched their cold case evidence, and they were able to get a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody on Wednesday.

Police also believe he is responsible for a similar attack in Dallas in 1999, and say there may be more victims that have not been identified.

They're asking anyone with information about his possible relation to criminal activity to call the Plano Police Department tip line at 972-941-2148 or policetips@plano.gov.
