Scottsbluff police responded Saturday to reports of a shooting at a convenience store, only to discover the shooter was a dog.
Shortly after noon on May 24, 2026, officers with the Scottsbluff Police Department were called to the Short Stop convenience store at 2002 Avenue I after a report of a person being shot. Initial calls mentioned a possible BB gun, but updates confirmed it involved a shotgun.
According to police, the owner of a truck with an attached camper had pulled into the store. While the passenger stood near the front passenger-side door, a dog in the backseat moved across the vehicle and stepped on a loaded shotgun with a live shell in the chamber. The firearm discharged, sending pellets through the passenger door.
At that moment, a woman stopped at a nearby traffic light on Avenue I had her arm resting outside her window. One pellet struck her in the upper right arm. Her injuries were not life-threatening, and a family member transported her to Regional West Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
The incident remains under investigation. Nebraska law generally requires long guns to be unloaded and cased when transported in vehicles. The dog was not taken into custody.
